this is a blog entry of a blog that almost never wants to be a blog but a tumblr. if all tumblr didn't look like all tumblr i would have probably switched over to tumblr forever ago. as it is, things have been very interesting lately.

i saw luigi nono's promoteo which was something very very important to me. there's a sense of space and time that you don't really find in very many experiences. it was like being in a desert where something really important flashes in front of your eyes but then disappears before you can fully recognize what that thing was. this feeling lasted for 2.5 hours and it was pretty remarkable for nothing to be happening for that time frame but to never feel distracted or bored. indeed, the subtitle 'tragedy of hearing' was absolutely perfect. i cried.

i saw ostermayer's production of hamlet and i felt like this really addressed what a hamlet character could be like today as well as took the madness theme into our world and helped expose some of our cliches. lars did a helluva job eating all that mud and the rest and like any hamlet production worth its money, all the other characters fall away and it becomes this very intense study of a single body in various settings in various degrees of duress. i still think i like the wooster group's version more but it definitely gave me a lot to think about.

i saw christoph marthaler's subpolar and it was like every other christoph marthaler which for me is saying amazing is like amazing and holy fuck. the first scene where nothing could be seen but it sounded like they were playing basketball just off stage was so fucking haunting and amazing i almost couldn't bear it. then when they came in and took off their winter clothes and stood around and did nothing and listened to stories they didn't understand and then threw themselves at the walls out of frustration i simply thought yes yes yes yes yes yes. marthaler uses music like no other and it was so great to hear two of my favorite pieces ever - beethoven's 7th and schubert's D. 960 - used in such an intelligent, beautiful way. marthaler, i hate to use the term, is all affect, no story, and it makes me wish more people wrote stories like this. this, of course, was flaubert's dream but no fiction writer i can think of has perfected it.

i read ted berrigan's sonatas and all i could think was holy fucking fuck. the patterns felt immediately recognizable and i felt stupid that i had never read him when i was writing poetry. he was already doing a lot of the stuff that i was trying to do but like 40 years earlier and a lot better. not that i did the exact same thing - i was often writing 4 poems on top of one another, i.e. making simultaneity readable - but he really did something remarkable that i admire. each word is a brick. each brick could be placed anywhere. each brick as an element of the whole structure is basically irreplaceable. these are poems to return to.

i haven't really been listening to music or watching any movies because i've been too busy writing. i've got some projects underway, part of the big ms, and this has been eating up most of my free time except in my free time spent with j and swimming in lakes and eating really delicious food. the stuff is coming along and that's nice or whatever but sometimes i wish this project were over. i end up thinking about it a lot even when i'm not working on it so i know it's really important to me but there's this constant sense of frustration, to want to see it finally be born, that sometimes drives me mental. whatever. i've also sent some stuff out recently and had some really nice conversations with editors and there's like a handful of stuff in submishmash under the category 'in progress.' which i guess means something?

Researchers claim they have 'officially' discovered the most boring day of the 20th century… April 11 1954.
A team of Cambridge scientists say the day was devoid of any major news events or even the birth or death of any famous people.

They made the discovery after developing a new search engine which collates 300 million facts and can reveal what happened on certain days in history.

Running a script to compare all days from the beginning of the 20th century April 11 1954 was revealed as the most uneventful.

The 'highlight' events included a general election in Belgium and the birth of a Turkish academic… and we thought today was boring.

I have a family of taxidemied hamsters for sale. They are perfect for the kid who wants a hamster but you know damn well won't take care of them. Just buy a cage, pose them in it and tell the kids to enjoy. If the kids ask why they aren't moving just explain to them that happy hamsters keep still. These hamsters were originally bought with love and taken care of very well. Then, as is usually the case with my little ba**** kid, he lost interest and kept forgetting to feed them. One by one they dropped off. I couldn't bear to flush these cute things down the toilet so I bought a taxidermy kit and stuffed them. The best part about these guys is that they won't soil the cage or cost anything in food! They'll just give hours of pleasure like live hamsters. I've been in Ireland the past month. Tightened up a manuscript, finished a couple of small continuations of the ole Slack Dog Snake Driver that was featured at abjective (now, sadly, stillgelegt), and worked on the novel a little. I did a lot of hiking and finally swam at Forty Foot. The fjord this year was warmer than ever. I learned a lot about the fjord and that many interesting people have lived there (Wittgenstein, I knew of already, but that King George III, Oscar Wilde and some other WWI-era British poets all had hunting homes there was news to me). I climbed the hill there again (800+ m) and ran down as fast as possible.

While I was in Ireland, I tried to visit Dalkey Archive's office in Dublin but it seems to be a private residence. Or at least an 'office' without a phone number or anyone there during business hours. So, instead, I went to Dalkey, which seems to have been untouched by time.

I finally read the Dalkey Archive and found it to be lacking. The Poor Mouth was much more in the spirit of his other novels and was exciting and an interesting read even the second time around. The way that book moves is really elegant. The Dalkey Archive in contrast is the wanderings of a drunken bitter man. Some great ideas but the execution and reliance on the detective story plot left me cold. Just as cold as reading his newspaper columns 'At War.' Maybe this would have been better to read daily and not in huge chunks in a couple of days?

One thing that was interesting was to see how life seems to have carried on as usual during WWII in Ireland. Sure, there were fewer bananas (not that the Irish are huge fans of fresh fruit, anyway) but other than that, life seems to have carried on as usual. Ireland is this weird part of Europe that isn't really part of anything. It was like that before the Vikings as well it seems. And every time they get pulled into something larger, it fails. Strange land of eternal winter.

I have tons of pictures of ghost estates i don't know what to do with.

i am writing one of the strangest things i've ever written.

the last time i said that it was accepted and will become its own chapbook and that will be out in the future.

this time i'm saying this i'm not so sure what's going to happen to it. parts of it have been turned into online journals and one part was rejected and i think i might pull back on the other part. there's something about its cohesive effect that works way way more than alone. and. and i also think i would rather see it on paper. somethings i don't mind really to be lasered into eyes on screens but this somehow feels very physical. saying turned into online journals makes me feel like homework which makes me feel icky. sorry online journals. i still read you all the time. i swear.

see, i have this problem. i like complicated things. i like absurd things. these make the hairs on my arm stand on end and even sometimes give me a feeling like a warm hug. a warm hug in a book makes me think of ice cubes melting in a glass with a lot of imperfections in the sun. this isn't very interesting to me. i'm sorry.

i like the phrase 'keep it simple, st00pid.' and i do try to keep it simple. really, i swear, i do. but then certain ramifications always take me somewhere else and i love those ramifications as much as everything else. i do.

Kuhle Wampe is a place J & I stumbled upon yesterday when we went into the forest for a picnic. We thought we were going to meet some people at Devil's Lake, which doesn't seem to exist on any map. We went to a lake called Long Lake and then went for a walk and there was Kuhle Wampe. People have brought their idea of home with them to the tents. They have left nothing to the imagination. There are satellite dishes outside of tents inside of tents. Everyone did not seem to have an empty belly. We for our part left with bellies full of carrots and cucumbers and peppers and dip. I ate cheese which made my belly balloon. Interesting, I know.

two very different movies about the same architect and his creations.

house life was intriguing if a little annoying. the caretaker got on my nerves a little and the idea of following her around the house started to drag on a bit. there were some nice shots and portraits of different parts of the building though. i also liked how it showed the inherent problems of a building like this and how these problems are obviously not of any concern to either the people who build them nor the people who live in them - the rich - but only to the people that have to take care of them. there is something at stake here and it's not entirely compatible with what koolhaas normally talks about with his buildings. still the building is gorgeous. the other movie was interesting and informative and tried to deconstruct the myth of koolhaas but only veiled him more. sure we all know that architecture is collective and so the directors here showed members of the oma team but then they only ever talked about his ideas. only the structural engineer ever said 'we' but then often corrected himself. also the movie could have dealt more closely with some of the themes it touched upon like the influence of constant and utopias. we begin there and end there but it gets lost in the middle. this is a very dense movie in a lot of ways that would require multiple viewings but the way it's made doesn't really make you want to watch it again. a real shame. are his buildings incapable of being captured in film?

i saw the botschaft the other day on my way to a 'pop up restaurant' and i said 'oh, that's koolhaas' to a friend and she said 'nee, nee, nee' or something to that extent. nevertheless, i was right. there seems to be something about his buildings, a trademark if you will, that make them immediately recognizable. i don't really know what it is. for me, there's just a feel to his buildings. there's an absurdity and a playfulness too. i like this about his buildings.

Anyone wanna go to Porto with me to check this behemoth out?

If you're in Berlin tonight and are free, go see Twin Prism Productions production Schweigstück. Twin Prism in this constellation is Frank James Willens and Jan Burkhardt dancing, Daniel Jenatsch musicing, Sophie Malmberg costuming and me texting by way of video. The concept of the piece was that Frank and Jan not talk with one another when they're working on stage and that the rest of us not talk either. Thus, I watched a couple of rehearsals and then came up with a text, two texts actually about flying and being in airports and then decided that it could not be spoken but had to be somehow visual. I then made a video and was hoping to near silence. I can say very, very little about the rest of the piece. Not because it would break some code of honor but rather because I've been out of the country for more than a month. I really, really, really wish I was there to see it.
